Lower School

Applying to Kindergarten

Kindergarten applicants must turn five years old by September 1st of the year of entry.

Below is a list of "How to Apply" steps in suggested order.

Register to Attend an Open House

Once you have created an account through Ravenna you will be able to register to attend an Open House session. Be sure to create your account using an email address you will have access to throughout the admission season, as this will be your primary email contact with our school. During these adult-only evening visits, prospective applicant parents will have the opportunity meet our faculty and learn more about a Speyer education.

Complete and Submit an Application

Please submit your application through Ravenna. A photograph of your child and payment of $75 is due at the time of application. Supplemental admissions materials can also be submitted through Ravenna.

For questions regarding Ravenna, please contact their customer care services.

Application Fee Waivers – Please note, application fee waivers are available only for applicants from the following programs: A Better Chance (ABC), the Boys Club of New York, Early Steps, and Prep for Prep.

Child's Onsite Visit and Parent Tour/Conversation

The onsite visit and tour take place on the same day for a 1.5-hour period. Select faculty members and staff meet with groups of prospective students for group and independent activities, while accompanying parents take a tour of the school, including classroom visits.

Parent conversations provide an opportunity for an applicant child’s parents to speak with a member of our admissions team about their child and educational expectations. These conversations are scheduled for 30 minutes on a day separate from the onsite visit.

Additional Details and Documentation/Testing

We welcome additional relevant information that may help us more fully understand your child’s academic capacity. Part of our onsite evaluation involves ‘thinking activities’, a 20 minute one-on-one assessment conducted by a testing expert. The results of these activities provide us with a snapshot of each child’s abilities and are an important part of our evaluation process.

If your child has additional test results available, such as Stanford Binet, ECAA or other recognized independent standardized tests, and you believe they will provide a helpful perspective, we are happy to receive them. Please upload any additional supplementary documentation through Ravenna, or email admissions@speyerschool.org, or fax (212) 757–1963. Children applying to kindergarten who do not have independent test scores available will not be disadvantaged as files are reviewed.

Financial Aid Application (if applicable)

To apply for aid, parents must complete an application with School and Student Services (SSS) at www.sssbynais.org no later than January 8, 2018, after submitting their Speyer application. An affiliate of the National Association of Independent Schools (NAIS), SSS is a nationwide service that assists independent schools in processing requests for financial assistance.

Applying to Grades 1 - 4

Children who turn six no later than Sept. 1, 2017 may apply for placement into our 2017-18 First Grade class. For children with fall birthdays applying for all other grades, please apply for the next academic year for your child. Should we believe that placement in the same grade would be a more appropriate fit that recommendation is likely to be discussed.

The number of spaces available in grades 1 – 4 varies from year to year. All successful candidates should begin the process with strong academic records and/or test scores.

Provide Independent Test Scores and School Records

A copy of an independent test, taken within the past year, is required as part of the application. The ECAA (also known as the ERB) test can be scheduled at www.erbtest.org or by calling (212) 672-9801. Alternatively, a copy of the most recent year’s NYC Gifted and Talented or Stanford Binet Score Report will be accepted.

A copy of our School Records Authorization Form is available on Ravenna. Please give this form to your child’s current school to send all report cards and school records for your child directly to The Speyer Legacy School Admissions Office.

A copy of schoolwork you would consider to be representative of your child’s "best effort," including teacher comments (if possible), must also be uploaded to your Ravenna application.

Child’s Onsite Visit and Parent Tour/Conversation

The onsite visit and tour take place on the same day. Depending on the grade to which your child is applying, the length of the visit varies from 2 to 3.5 hours. While the children are enjoying their visit, which involves math and literacy assessments as well as a variety of activities designed to replicate a typical Speyer day, accompanying parents take a tour of the school, including classroom visits.

Parent conversations provide an opportunity for an applicant child’s parents to speak with a member of our admissions team about their child and educational expectations. These conversations are scheduled for 30 minutes on a day separate from the onsite visit.
